The Signifiers Michael Neno 0649856000316 Books
Torn from the pages of tomorrow, they ride- the Signifiers! But Who is the Voyst? Who is John Galt? And more importantly, who put the bop in the boppity bop de bop? Hmm? In this KING-sized special debut anthology issue, none of these questions and more are answered! But you will see the nine panel grid live on! You will meet the far out hippies of Be-In Park, the mutated anthromorphs of Freaktown, and the nefariously corporate Pollution Pioneers! Non-sequitor!Michael Neno gets his groove on, picking up threads from his previous Reactionary Tales comic and introducing a plethora of new characters and their zany world. The plot is scattershot, with absurd airs magically void of pretensions as the reader is compelled by forces he cannot comprehend to delve into these three separate tales of wonder. Imagination overload, but such a fun ride and with the craziest dialogue ever. Actually, many of the convos are so realistic they may well be intentional non-sequitor, but it all just adds to the vibrancy of this shocking new thing.
His art is heavy on the Kirby, richly so. This may be the most faithfully executed homaging I have ever read of Jack Kirby's work, from breakdowns to larger than life frames and expressions to attempted 60s hepcat cool dialogue to masterful usage of blacks and brushy inks. There is a lot of science fantasy to this, and maybe some social commentary, but it comes through like riding a rollercoaster backwards through a lucid dream. The first story has more experimental chiaroscuro action, and the second story is done in micro-comix fashion, while the final piece has the boldest forms and dynamo. And all of this from the same man...impressively fun.
Also including humorous adverts, a helpful map, and letters pages, this is retro in only the finest ways conceivable. Really, this is explosively hypnotic, and should greatly appeal to any and all fans of the King, of Mike Allred's indie work, of Gilbert Hernandez, of 1960s rock, of Cerebus, of the unfinished 1963 comics from Image, of peace, of love, and for anyone willing to try pronouncing "Ypytlic" in public. If it gets any better than this, it'd be illegal.
